Homemade Jalapeño Cheddar Bagels: A Spicy Twist on a Classic

August 27, 2024 by Gina +

Jump to Recipe

I’ve always been a fan of bagels, but I wanted to create a version that wasn’t just delicious but also packed with protein. That’s how I came up with these homemade jalapeño cheddar bagels. They’re soft on the inside, perfectly chewy on the outside, and have a little kick from the jalapeños. What I love most about these bagels is that they’re not only tasty but also a great source of protein. You can enjoy them on their own, topped with a dollop of cottage cheese, or even turned into a hearty breakfast sandwich.

Why I Love These Homemade Jalapeño Cheddar Bagels

When I’m looking for a satisfying breakfast or snack, these homemade jalapeño cheddar bagels hit the spot. Each bagel is loaded with protein thanks to the cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, and low-fat cheddar cheese in the dough. This means I can enjoy a bagel that’s more than just empty carbs; it’s a balanced meal all on its own. Plus, they’re versatile enough to be a canvas for even more protein. I love spreading some extra cottage cheese on top or using them as a base for a protein-packed breakfast sandwich with eggs and avocado.

Key Ingredients Breakdown

• All-Purpose Flour: The base of any good bagel, providing structure and chewiness. I use all-purpose flour because it’s readily available and gives the perfect texture to these bagels.
• Cottage Cheese: This is where a big chunk of the protein comes in. I love using low-fat cottage cheese (my absolute favorite) to keep things lighter while still adding that creamy texture and protein boost.
• Greek Yogurt: Another protein-packed ingredient that also helps keep the bagels moist. I use plain Greek yogurt for a subtle tang and additional protein.
• Low-Fat Shredded Cheddar Cheese: Who doesn’t love a cheesy bagel? The cheddar cheese adds that delicious, sharp flavor while keeping the fat content lower. If you aren’t a fan of low-fat, regular is totally fine.
• Jalapeño: The star of the show! Fresh jalapeños add just the right amount of heat, making these bagels unique and full of flavor. If you prefer less spice, you can always remove the seeds, use less, or use a milder pepper.

How to Enjoy Your Homemade Jalapeño Cheddar Bagels

These bagels are so versatile, and that’s another reason I love making them. Here are a few of my favorite ways to enjoy them:

1. As-Is: Fresh out of the oven, these bagels are perfect on their own. The combination of cheddar and jalapeño provides plenty of flavor without needing anything extra.
2. Topped with Cottage Cheese: For an extra protein boost, I like to top mine with a generous spread of cottage cheese. Sometimes I add a sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning on top for an added crunch.
3. Breakfast Sandwich: These bagels make the perfect base for a breakfast sandwich. I love adding a scrambled egg, avocado, and some turkey bacon or smoked salmon for a delicious and filling start to the day.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Can I use a different type of cheese in these bagels?
A: Absolutely! While I love the sharp flavor of cheddar, you can easily swap it for any cheese you prefer. Pepper jack would add an extra kick, or Monterey Jack would be great for a milder option.

Q: How spicy are these bagels?
A: The spiciness can be adjusted to your liking. I use one sliced jalapeño with the seeds for a moderate amount of heat. If you want it spicier, add more jalapeños or keep all the seeds. For a milder flavor, use less or remove the seeds.

Q: Can I make these bagels gluten-free?
A: Yes, you can try using a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend. The texture might be slightly different, but they should still be delicious!

Q: How should I store these bagels?
A: I recommend storing them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days. For longer storage, you can freeze them. Just slice the bagels in half before freezing so you can pop them right into the toaster when you’re ready to enjoy them.

Q: Can I make the dough ahead of time?
A: Yes, you can prepare the dough and keep it in the fridge for up to 24 hours before shaping and baking the bagels. This can be a great time-saver for busy mornings!

These homemade jalapeño cheddar bagels are a new favorite in my house, and I’m sure they’ll become a staple in yours, too. Not only are they delicious, but they’re also packed with protein, making them a great option for a balanced meal. Whether you enjoy them on their own, with a spread of cottage cheese, or as a part of a hearty breakfast sandwich, these bagels are sure to satisfy!

Ingredients Method Nutrition

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup cottage cheese
  • 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup low-fat shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 jalapeno 1/2 diced, 1/2 sliced for topping (or less if you don't want it spicy)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375.
  2. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Using your hands is easiest. Add more flour if it's too sticky.
  3. Once you can form it into a ball, cut into 4 equal parts. Roll those into balls then form into a bagel.
  4. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet. I like to brush with egg, top with a little more cheddar and the sliced jalapenos.
  5. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until crispy on top. Best served warm and toasted.
